DIPLOMA IN DENTAL HYGIENE
OF THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND
The Diploma in Dental Hygiene course commenced in University College Cork in September 1993. To accommodate the training of undergraduate Dental Hygienists a new purpose built unit was built and equipped adjacent to the University Dental School and Hospital. The Minister for Health officially opened the building in June 1994. The first class of four students was conferred with the Diploma in Dental Hygiene, N.U.I., at the Medical and Dental Conferring Ceremony held in U.C.C. in June 1995.
The course in Cork is a two-year full-time day course, leading to the Diploma in Dental Hygiene of the National University of Ireland. The course is confined to matriculated students (who have completed their school leaving examination by the closing date for application) or such students of mature years. Students must be at least 18 years of age by 15th October in the year of proposed entry to the course.
Matriculation/National University of Ireland Requirements:
Dental Hygienist – subjects required by matriculation: Minimum Grade HC3 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects to Honours or Ordinary level in the Leaving Certificate from Irish, English, another language, Mathematics, Biology and one other recognised subject.
This Diploma Course is advertised by University College Cork in the press in February and application forms can be obtained at that time from the Admissions Office. After processing the application forms, eligible candidates are selected for interview. Interviews normally take place in May in the University Dental School and Hospital. Successful candidates are offered places on the Diploma Course, which commences in September.
